CAMERON ROBBINS

This drawing encompasses the time of Lockdown in Victoria made over the 14 days July 30 – August 7 2021 Sunspot was created using a large scale wall-mounted kinetic drawing instrument in which the pen is solar powered, marking when the sun shines. The radius of the drawing stroke is increased by 25mm per day until it reaches its maximum, and there it stays for a few extra days. Phase-space diagrams; stochastic bundles; physics of objects in motion; sunlight and shadow; landscape and its influence. The 300gsm watercolour paper was hand coloured and textured to convey an idea of the plasma of the sun’s surface. The dark lines are water-soluble graphite. Each day, many times the drawing was wetted to allow for easy line marking. Each line is made as sunlight filters through cloud, atmosphere, and trees, to motivate a solar-motor driven pen. Each day, drawings accumulate from thousands of consecutive lines. Without any battery storage, if the sun stops shining, the line stops. Cloudy moments, shade, and nights the pen lies still. Gaps left between each bundle of lines, revealing the wall…a drawing of solar energy, time, trees’ dappled light and cloud shadow.
