LANA de JAGER

It can be a creative act to occupy an area, but only if we consider animals and plants in the creation of our communities, rather than unsettle them. Currently, the balance is worse than tenuous. Animals are dependent on our decisions and humans face the most creative challenge: reducing our constant and unpredictable impact on the earth to be stewards rather than colonists.

With Umwelt the focus could not be simpler.

Biologist Jakob von Uexküll (1909) coined this word. The subset of the world that an animal can detect its umwelt and each organism assumes it to be the entire objective reality “out there.”
