This work is a reaction to the popularity of another earlier painting “The Grampians from Moyston”. Very attractive and much-loved, it was equally as much misunderstood. It was/is actually a painting of an environmental disaster on the edges of Gariwerd. I made and painted over several versions trying to create an image that showed what used to be there, how interconnected our fragile environment is and the choices we have to make to put the puzzle back together.

ANTHONY PELCHEN

The River near Morgan, 2004
Acrylic paint on canvas
Unframed
76 x 112 x 3cm
$16,150 (inclusive of postage and handling within Australia)

The result of a long slow journey along the Murray, I started this painting vertically as a pregnant torso to represent the fertility of the river. It then took on a life of its own. When hung horizontally it depicts a hot summer’s morning and if you flip it over, the light comes from the opposite direction and is a cooling summer’s evening.
