Landscape with front-end loader and kangaroo, 5/8/2022

ANTHONY PELCHEN

2022

charcoal, pastel & collage on paper
37cm h x 63cm w framed

In 2014 and 2022 I sat in orange dirt at Fowlers Gap Research Station, north of Broken Hill in Wiljaali Country, and made drawings. On each occasion, feeling that majestic land and responding was mediated by stumbling on striking counterpoints; in 2014 it was near-mummified kangaroo and in 2022 an abandoned front-end loader. Curiously, both had claws and registered powerfully as markers of change and of a troubled nature.

During and after the last visit I made thirty drawings, wanting to sink into and feel what had presented … to honour the dirt and the fallen kangaroo.
