Old echidna

MARIA BRAY

2023

Collograph, intaglio with copper inclusions on Magnani paper.
68cm h x 81cm w framed

Pioneer artists first illustrated Echidnas in 1792, the early images were curious, quaint and lacking proportions.

This work is inspired by colonist, amateur, naturalists, who drew the creatures as a novelty and in some cases they ate them for their “delicate flavour”.

Years ago an echidna accidentally euthanised itself under the wheel of my car. Distraught— the body accompanied me home where I eulogised its form in drawings before its burial.

Echidnas hold my respect, I honour this unique and exceptional species by giving it, a sacred place in this art work.
